I don't think that a replacement for SMTP is worthwhile unless it provides a
major increase in functionality. I would want to see something that
integrates the functionality of instant messaging, video conferencing, mail,
audio, video p2p and resource syndication.
I agree on instant messaging, and possibly also resource syndication.
I would not have thought that video conferencing would go on the list
since that has a very different set of demands - for example,
timelyness is more important than reliability.
