OK, so how about this for neutral:
The authentication method completed but was unable to reach a positive
or negative result for the message.
Are we trying to convey "the method says X" or "the server which used
the method came up with results of X?"
If the latter, "neutral" becomes much more important.
I'm not sure you can ever have just the former. Since the method is executed by
the server, it's always done in the server's context, so the latter is the
implied meaning.
