Interesting. You reminded me of an MH-E implementation that uses MD5
checksums to create an X-MHE-Checksum header field to perform quick
lookups of current messages. Note that we would use this header field
even if the message was signed.
I guess we didn't know about Content-MD5 (RFC 1864). I can't find its
documentation. I suppose from the RFC, it's primary use would be to add
it to outgoing messages (perhaps via a send argument). In MH-E's case,
we need to add the header field to a received message, so we'd probably
use anno.
