AFAICT ... that seems to be valid Unicode.  I can view it fine and
it shows up as the appropriate characters.

This gets into complicated, non-nmh territory; a lot of the specifics
here depend on your specific version of nmh, your configured character
set, the terminal program you are using AND how it is configured.  I
believe that (except for a few corner cases) nmh does the Right Thing
when presented with this email.  If you could give more information
about how maybe nmh isn't doing the right thing, we can work on that.

Not saying that it's not unicode, just that it makes a mess of my window.
Using mate-terminal on linux, utf-8 local.

Well, just in case this helps, here's a section of my spam folder.  Stick
it in a folder and scan.  Screws up the display after message 5.
