Wolfgang, The distinction is between a SEQUENCE which has empty OPTIONAL elements and an empty SEQUENCE which is itself an OPTIONAL element. A SEQUENCE containing empty OPTIONAL elements is encoded as a SEQUENCE of zero length. An empty SEQUENCE which is an OPTIONAL element is absent in the encoding. John
