Yes, it works.  But so, according to the manual page, should the -g option.
I've been talking this through privately with dattier(_at_)wwa(_dot_)com (David 
W.  
Tamkin), and we've come to the conclusion that is an old option from an  
earlier sed which got carried over into the GNU manual by mistake.  It's  
not very useful, and it seems to have been dropped from the binary.
