To answer the original question, the "nickname" field was a hack installed
in the phquery part of the package so that anyone could add an entry to
their "nickname" field and if it was unique you could send mail to
"nickname(_at_)uiuc(_dot_)edu" as well as "alias(_at_)uiuc(_dot_)edu"

This made it easy for users who didn't have any special access to run
mailing lists out of their university-provided unix account.
