Re: Auto-extracting attachments

2001-09-11 07:15:31
It's been on my mind to ask if this had already been done (extracting
attachments from messages and writing them to a directory) before
attempting to write the recipies myself! Now I see that someone is way
ahead there.

Above all, what I wanted to ask was:

1. Does this make sense (is it practical to rip the attachment and edit
the body or headers and leave simply a link to it)? What would it break?

2. Is procmail the tool to use (it seems obvious, but what else is needed?
metamail? RipMIME? mpack?).

3. Are there any gotchas? I do some fairly simple mail preprocessing with
procmail, and I'm afraid I don't have the background to assess all the
risks.

Thanks a lot.

An advantage I **could** see would be if attachments were removed from

I'm trying this idea on my own and it seems to work so far (I'm close to
asking for people to send me different attachments to test it).

The advantage is several-fold, IMO:

1) Save download time for attachments (it's faster to download a file
from the web than it is as a mail encoding (25% savings, IIRC)

2) Archive a copy of attachments on the server

3) Get a virus? The attachment never even gets d/l to your machine, so
you can safely delete it off the server. This was really handy for HaHa
and "I send this file for your advise" viruses.

Actually you could use ftp and ftp://user:password(_at_)host:port/path rather
than a web-accessible folder, but I had problems with that method so I
didn't pursue it.
