It would be nice if an MTA could distinguish between failures it discovers

to the postmaster.

Another way might be using a separate set of exit codes for the two classes;
a user might still set the value that notifies the postmaster, but it take a
deliberate act by the user.

Where can I find a list of exist codes and how the MTA (in my case
Sendmail) interprets them? (I assume that for compatibility with local
mailers, the exit codes are consistent amongst MTAs that launch them?)
I know that 67 is a user unknown error. I see a few other EXITCODEs in
the list archives (77="permission denied", 75="temporary failure"), and
something else must indicate a mailbox over quota ... but I can't find a
definitive list in the sendmail documentation, and I'm unsure where else
to look. (And the crowd cries "use the source, Luke.")

I'd rather avoid learning this empirically if there's an easier way. ;)
