Sendmail now invokes Procmail

2002-05-22 21:19:50
Hello fellows,

I want to thank all of you who helped me on this problem
which developed after my hard disk crashed and I updated to
RH 7.2 and Procmail 3.21. I truly appreciate the time and
effort some of you put into it. I learned quite a bit from
you.

I knew that the default LDA for Sendmail is Procmail,
however, the messages were not reaching my .procmailrc file.
They were reaching the users mailboxes through different
means. Nothing was being written to the Procmail logs. I
create a Unix user for each email POP3 account.

I knew it had to be something simple that I was missing. I
wrote to the list and your comments were very helpful. You
gave me ideas. I learned.

The only entries out of the ordinary, indeed the only ones
referring to Procmail in my /var/log/maillog file were many
similar entries such as:

May 19 12:29:45 dns1 procmail[8943]: Error while writing to
"/home/cuba/procmail/log"
May 19 16:13:18 dns1 procmail[12006]: Error while writing to
"/home/mustang/procmail/log"
May 19 16:13:20 dns1 procmail[12009]: Error while writing to
"/home/arlen/procmail/log"
May 19 19:36:01 dns1 procmail[14817]: Error while writing to
"/home/prcigar/procmail/log"
May 19 20:00:53 dns1 procmail[15140]: Error while writing to
"/home/hrfc/procmail/log"
May 21 13:11:42 dns1 procmail[18273]: Error while writing to
"/home/procmail/log"
May 21 15:31:14 dns1 procmail[20678]: Error while writing to
"/home/cuba/procmail/log"

I was reprimanded somewhat for bringing "off topic" issues,
such as DNS, Sendmail, Redhat Linux, etc. But fellows...
Procmail is not an island unto itself; in fact, it is
absolutely nothing without the other components. It is only
when harmony exists between them, that Procmail is able to
do its magic. Don't be so specialized that you cure the
ailment but lose the patient.

Well, I am happy to report that the problem is solved and
everything seems so far to be in working order. The cause
was extremely simple. It seems that either from the new
installation or from restoring the files, the permissions
got changed. The .procmailrc file, the procmail directory
and the log file, were all chmodded 644. When I chmodded
the .procmailrc file and the procmail directory 755 and the
log file 666, the problem disappeared! I then did it to
every account, using a script. So far, everything seems OK.

I now tried to find the RPM for version 3.22, but haven't
been able to so far. I will keep looking, and then try to
install it. You see, I use a Windows screen reader and
voice synthetizer and am thus able to reach the server
through Samba or Telnet. I cannot however, do the initial
installation, which must be made from the console, because
Unix does not talk. That is another project. There is a
software called Emacspeak which speaks from Unix and is
supposedly better, but I haven't had time to experiment.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Humberto Rodriguez
