Re: Mail Forwarding?

5 minutes fast -- that's Windows for you. Probably because it was using
time.windows.com -- I told it to use time.nist.gov now. But that would
suggest you are 21 minutes fast rather than me being slow since
synchronizing moved me even further back.

No forwarding needed. Using IMAP the messages are stored on the server in
maildir folders. The server feeds them up on port 143 to the requesting
IMAP client. It's rather like reading newsgroups. The client grabs the
newest message headers when it first connects. It only grabs the bodies og
the messages when you select them to read. My own IMAP server is set to use
a different port because the firewall at work blocks 143 but that is up to
you.

It's nice because all of the folders/messages are stored on a single
machine. Regardless of where you connect from you are ALWAYS working with
the SAME set of folders and mesages. You don't end up getting "out of
synch" because you used a POP3 client to grab some of the messages off of
the server with your laptop then discover you need to reply to one of those
messages from another machine somewhere else. With EXIM set up to do all
outbound mail deliveries via smarthost you just set your own server as the
SMTP server for your client machine.

I prefer Courier IMAP because it DOES use standard maildir folders which
makes integration with procmail a snap (I too download from 8 or 10
addresses from 3 or 4 different domains). The other IMAP servers out there
tend to use their own mail storage format and you have to jump through
hoops to get procmail working with them.

I suggest you grab courier-imap and glance through the documentation.
