Nancy in the Procmail tips site says that a lock file is not necessary
on MAILDIR format type mailboxes. You say it is. Which way is correct?
Marvin, you're confusing MAILDIR in capitals with maildir in lower case.
They are not the same thing.
Certainly Nancy said that the local lockfile is unnecessary for saves to
folders in maildir format. Procmail's MAILDIR variable is its current
working directory; changing the value of MAILDIR makes procmail chdir.
The maildir storage format was designed and named much later, despite
the conflict with the already longstanding use of MAILDIR by procmail.
Storing a message in a maildir does not require a lockfile.
Storing a message in an mbox does require a lockfile [usually a local
one, unless a regional or global lockfile is in effect at the time],
whether or not the mbox is in the directory where the MAILDIR variable
currently points.
