AW: AW: Mailbox type / Folders

2004-05-19 04:25:17
Hello Nancy,

thanks for replying.
I think that, unless you know exactly what the relevant packages are doing,
you (or, at least, I) have trouble in knowing what is where.
Your excellent Quick Guide simply says "Make sure you replace $HOME/Msgs
with the directory where your mailboxes are stored".
My problem is finding this out. Procmail -v returns the path to "Your system
mailbox" which Kai Schätzl then refers to as "INBOX". This is not your
fault, but very confusing. In my Linux distribution with my packages, the
mails are stored (as I now know) in files under the $HOME directory of the
account I am using to receive all mails. As the `mbox` file doesn't show up
on a plain (ls) directory listing, I wasn't expecting it there.
Please don't think this is criticism, just maybe it makes things clearer for
others who are new to imap & procmail.

Sincerely,

Robert von Knobloch

/var/spool/mail/bob is your INBOX, it doesn't have any other "folders".
Mailfolder test in your Mozilla or IMAP client is in your home directory,
which usually is /home/bob

Your MAILDIR is NOT /var/spool/mail/, it's something like $HOME/Mail. You
need
to look, it could also be $HOME/mail or something similar.

The Procmail Quickstart http://www.ii.com/internet/robots/procmail/qs/
explains that in detail.

I have located the correct mailfiles, directly in the mail users $HOME. I
had read the Procmail Quickstart but must disagree. This information is
not
in the article. Thanks anyway, all is working well.

It's in step 4 in the Step-By-Step section, which is here:

but maybe I need to make this more clear.
