I prefer the more obvious look of the first example, though I am sure
other prefer the more concise look of the second.
This is getting weird. I tried your first example first, and it did
indeed work. But I almost didn't know, because when mplayer is invoked
it automatically lowers the system sound from pcm 75:75 to pcm 6:6. It
was just barely audible. When I reset the sound via the command line
with the "mixer" command the same thing happens again. I can't get the
system volume to stay at normal levels. I have no idea why this is
happening.
