I have the { } optional for the single letter case (as used in the exp=
case). Thus you can say %d or %{d}. The %{d2} has to use the braces.
I'm nervous about making too many things optional as they probably don't
get tested well! Also, stuff that is easy to do in perl is often much
trickier in other languages!
Indeed, how many options do we have? can we express them all using a single
letter (it would have to be case insensitive)? then we can ditch the {}'s
all together.
