SPF Advocacy

2004-01-08 14:50:11

First, is there any coordinated advocacy for SPF going on? I realized that
there may be when the AOL 'news' came out. If that is the case, please let
me know if and how I can assist. I have a fair amount of free time and
other resources.

Second, I have sent emails to a couple of businesses with whom I have been a
customer for a while, essentially notifying them of the existence of SPF and
the spf.pobox.com web site. I wanted to post my email for public comment in
case I've said something I shouldn't, or left out something to include, and
for others to use if so desired.

Hi. I am a long-time customer of PayPal and wanted to see if you were aware
of a new tool in the anti-SPAM and anti-Phishing arsenal. SPF is a open
protocol which allows a domain owner to authoritatively declare the machines
from which a given domain's email will be sent. It is NOT a product that is
for sale. It is a protocol which has recently been finalized and is very
simple to use. There is a considerable amount of information on the
protocol at http://spf.pobox.com.

AOL (America OnLine) has recently shown some support for SPF by implementing
the appropriate DNS record. This can be seen by querying DNS for all text
records for the domain aol.com. I strongly sugguest that you look at
implementing SPF to help with protecting your domain integrity and others as
well. For instance, if a recipeint receives an email from
sender(_at_)paypal(_dot_)com, but it fails the SPF check, then it's spam and
would be
deleted!

If you need further information, please feel free to contact me at this
email address. Also, I can get you in touch with people more familiar the
protocol, if desired.

If anybody has a email body that's better, please let me know and I'll use
that, as I do plan on contacting other domain owners as well....

Sincerely,
Marc Alaia
