Re: What does SRS break [was: A couple of thoughts]

begin Monday 16 February 2004 12:18, Brian Candler quote:
These are pretty important services, and one reason I can see why having a
widely adopted "standard" for SRS-format addresses, which such software can
be upgraded to recognise. But in the short term, users whose addresses are
munged with SRS are going to see problems, aren't they?

An "easy" solution for this: only do the SRS munging when actually
forwarding a message, not for normal transmissions.

That way, the only way that a mailing list is going to see an
SRS-munged address is if the list-operator (or somebody else) has set
up a forwarding alias pointing to the list.

If the forwarding alias has been set up by the list-operator himself,
hopefully he is smart enough to configure is list software in such a
way as to deal with SRS.

If on the other hand, the forwarding has been set up by an
unauthorized third party, maybe the fact that any such mails get
rejected/delayed/need_extra_confirmation is not such a bad thing at
all.
