This is a bit off topic, but I've seen multiple PTR records for one ip
address,
for example 64.251.192.200 has 245 different PTR records. I can't help
but
think this is violating some established practice somewhere.

It is... While it's not necessarily against the RFC AFAIK, the Cricket
book (4th edition) says use ONE PTR record and it should point at the
canonical name only.


Unfortunately, when a A record is setup, the default (atleast with Windows
DNS manager) is a checkbox that says:

        [X] Also Add PTR record at the same time

or something like that.
