Well, I agree that this is a pretty strong attitude, but as Meng
points out, there aren't many mailing lists that don't already do
this.

There are two reasons for this.

First, any mailing list that doesn't replace the envelope-from will
cause any bounces to be sent to people who post to the list.  So, the
mailing list manager won't easily know about the bounces, and anyone
who posts to the list will get a ton of bounces.  Any mailing lists
that lacks this feature isn't going to be too popular.

Second, this is a requirement in RFC2821.


From everything I can tell, mailing lists are not a problem with SPF.
Mail forwarders, on the other hand, are.  To a lesser extent, roaming
users are a problem, but there are far more solutions for them.


If we cop this attitude on potential users, then they will proceed to ignore
us as elitist geeks.

Yes, if we have this attitude in general, we are going to have a rough
time.  In this particular case, is somewhat understandable.
