Of course they are not holding onto the patent for monetary reasons. I
think they are doing it as a leverage (one of many) against open source
software.
And if I were Mr. Gates, I would do the same. He can't let his
shareholders down, even if he is personally willing to sacrifice for the
common good. This isn't just a bunch of rich folks getting richer. It's
people with Microsoft stock in their retirement funds. Open source is
taking over even their last stronghold, the desktop.
