No one is "totally missing the point" by processing the
DATA/body phase of the SMTP transaction. The fact that SPF could
be enforced before DATA was nice, but not that important in practice.
For small providers, it just isn't that much bandwidth and for
large providers they are already doing this.

Maybe people are not "totally missing the point", but you're certainly
missing a good portion of it, right here. Especially the part where the
understanding comes in that bandwidth is a limited commodity, ... UNLESS
you are a big ISP. So, good for AOL and Yahoo that they are willing to sit
out each DATA phase; I, however -- and I'm sure a slew of mail operators
with me, to whom bandwidth remains a scarce product, to be savored and not
wasted like there's no tomorrow -- I try and REJECT before DATA.
