Would it be useful to run continuous domain surveys to track adoption?
Well, things are not that easy. I have automated more of the steps,
but each survey still involves a lot of work. I have to try to obtain
newer copies of the domain lists,
Obtaining current domain lists will probably always remain a manual step.
the domain list have to be put into the right format,
Depending on where you get the domain lists from, the format may be
constant. In that case, the conversion should be trivial (-> Perl).
the data has to be copied to various machines to run the scans on, I run
into disk space issues a lot, I run into bandwidth/ISP problems a lot,
etc.
All the above steps beyond obtaining the lists should be easily
automatable. Perhaps we could even parallelize the surveys to run on
servers (or even workstations) of community members other than you alone
(think SETI(_at_)home)?
