Over the past 2 years, my personal spam has increased from about 100 per day
to over 10000 per day. However, thanks to the intricate web of technical
measures, including SPF, the number hitting my inbox has gone down
to about 2 per day.

The best data I can find is at http://mesagelabs.com - Threat Statistics - Spam Intercepts. Is there any other source of worldwide data on spam intercepts ( not inbox spam after filtering!! )?

My interpretation of this data is that there have been some significant increases and decreases in spam % since Can Spam went into effect Jan 04, but none of them seem to correlate with anything relating to Can Spam.

My wild guess about what is happening is that there was a major surge in the zombie population in the first half of 2004, followed a few months later by many ISPs shutting them down. The slow decrease since Aug 2004 may be due in part to aging Windows machines dying out, and in part to continued efforts at persuading senders to do the right thing (e.g. the FTC's anti-zombie campaign), pressure from receivers using SPF, etc.

Any other wild guesses?
