"a" by itself is OK. The domain defaults to host ambianceamerica.com
in this case.
The problem here is the trailing zero byte inside the record. When
looking up this record, I see something else than you report:
v=spf1 a mx ptr include:activehost.com\000
Not resulting in a permerror but wrong nevertheless is the absence
of a catch-all (for instance -all) after include.
The combination of "a mx ptr" indicates the creator of this record
probably does not know what he is doing.
