The relay at the sender's border is called a "smarthost".
The relay at the recipient's border is called an "MX".
There's no term for the possibly-multiple relays that constitute a
forwarder. However, we can generally treat the forwarder as a black box,
and just use the term "Forwarder" to refer to the whole thing.
Sender --> Relay --> /Border/ --> Forwarder(s) --> Receiver --> Recipient
Normal case:
Sender --> Smarthost ==> MX --> Recipient
Forwarding case:
Sender --> Smarthost ==> Forwarder ==> MX --> Recipient
Where "==>" denotes a border-crossing hop.
