of course the choice of word 'variable' is unfortunate cuz it may indicate
to the uninitiated 'something that could possibly vary' .
Its been used that way for hundreds of years, why should it cause
confusion now?
A value variable may be different in different instances,
if you go <xsl:variable name="x" select="foo"/>
in a template then the variable x will have a potentially different
value each time. In this sense it's not constant.
But when in mathematics or english you start off by saying
let p be a prime, .....
it would be strange to say the least if half way through the paragraph
you said, oh from this point on let's make p 4.
