That worked!  Thanks so much, David, for patiently figuring out what I
was trying to do, even though I couldn't articulate it clearly.

what do you actually mean by this

test="not(b/c)"

is true if there are no c grandcildren.

If you mean that you want the test to be true unless
that every b child has a c child then that's
not the case taht there is a b that has not got a c so:

test="not(b[not(c)])"
