Is there any chance that the remote server is not working properly. it
is screwing up the header?

If the simple .fetchmailrc isn't working then the headers aren't involved, it's all the local server.

With:

poll pop.isp.net user fred password blank to local_fred here

All email is pulled from the remote mailbox and passed to <local_fred> at your SMTP server. That server doesn't look at the headers (unless it's broken), it just uses <local_fred>.

As I've not tried it yet, could you provide the output of "fetchmail --nosyslog -v -v -v" for a SINGLE email please.
