The idea is to remove rusty code (LAST) in the first place. The argument
pro UIDL has been unchallenged so far, with no convincing nor compelling
reason to keep LAST. Sunil mentioned technical reasons why LAST is
unsafe even when fetchmail is exclusively accessing the mailbox, and
there's enough fodder that stands up against LAST even if I withdraw my
"used with other MUAs" argument.
