If your webmail server is showing no mails and fetchmail is showing

fetchmail neither downloads nor deletes this mail.

Shouldn't the POP server be smart enough not to indicate the existence of
the pseudo-message to a POP client?

If it's aware of the University of Washington mbox extension used by
their IMAP server and understood (aka hidden) by PINE, then perhaps yes.

Otherwise, and this is the case, no.

We have very special handling if
1. the message is first in the box
2. it contains an X-IMAP: header

I just recently committed (hm - is the SVN logs list up again? Doesn't
appear so) changes to transact.c and the FAQ (O15) to document this.

PS_RETAINED and the message "retained" are also uniquely used to
identify this behavior internally.
