There *is* a lot of folklore in both RFCs 1122 and 1123. What source
route to use in a TCP connection. Why you don't want to use many
extant implementations of ICMP Subnet mask. How to do TN3270. Etc.
It certainly isn't *all* there, and it doesn't come with big labels
in the section headers, but it was put there deliberately.
FYI, FTP has somewhat of a record for refusing to "fix" things where
the other guy isn't conforming to the spec. Would that others did also.
