I discussed MIME registration with Erik Huizer here at the RARE WG-MSG
meeting in Zurich.
He seemed to be saying that:
- Anything not starting with an X- should be registered
- Anything registered must have a published specification, so that
anyone can write a viewer for that format and distribute it freely
if he wants to.
- Some companies, notably one large word processing company, have
absolutely refused to register types for their documents, because
they regard the file format as company confidential.
So, registering first and fiddling around with it later seems not
to cut it.
