Keith Moore <moore(_at_)cs(_dot_)utk(_dot_)edu> writes:

The use of the group syntax <LIST:ietf-822(_at_)imc(_dot_)org;> meets the
syntax of
RFC 2822, and messages containing it should therefore pass freely through
all normal agents. It does not violate RFC 2822 in any way.

RFC 2277 is not mandatory. However, it is indeed somewhat dubious
practice to use keywords in fields not specifically designed for them.
OTOH, what CAN you use in a group-name that is not intended as an
identifier?

you're not using "LIST" to name the group, you are using it to
make an assertion about the group. and even then, it's not at all
clear why a list should be treated differently than any other recipient.

Yes, it stretches the intent of group syntax slightly.

But if there IS some way to distinguish LIST addresses from others, then
many benefits accrue, as many people have noted in these threads. For
example, it would show if a message had been crossposted to several lists,
enabling a Reply-to-List button to reply to them all.

But I would be happy to hear of other suggestions as to how that
information might be conveyed along with the message.
