Which is not necessarily what the author suggested, and is not
necessarily what the responder wants, and is not necessarily
appropriate (consider announce-only lists, which are lists
nevertheless).  Your claimed "benefit" isn't a benefit, it's a bug.

But I would be happy to hear of other suggestions as to how that
information might be conveyed along with the message.

If you want to go around in circles, there are the optional
RFC 2369 and RFC 2919 fields which have already been
mentioned.
