Re: [Asrg] Willfull and intentional misunderstandings

Alan,

RMX asks the owner of the domain about a purported relationship to
some other domain,

AD> That is absolute, total nonsense.

AD> Through DNS, RMX asks the owner of a domain if he has consented to
AD> allowing a particular MTA to send messages with envelope "from"
AD> claiming to be from that domain.

yup. the owner of the the From field domain has consented to permit the
owner of the domain under which the mta runs to send email through the
mta.

that's what I said.

so what is it that you thought was nonsense?

AD> When an MTA receives a connection from a spammer, claiming to be
AD> from 'aol.com', RMX queries the domain 'aol.com' about it's consent
AD> relationship with the originating MTA. RMX doesn't query the spammers
AD> domain.

What has not yet been explained is why anyone thinks it is critical to
prevent claims that email is coming from aol.com?

how will preventing spoofing reduce spam? (I am making a very large
stretch, here, and am assuming that folks actually have the goal of
reducing spam.)

it would help, for example, to see some sort of analysis that shows that
spoofed spam is somehow more dangerous than non-spoofed spam.

And, by the way, we have not achieved much, even if we make all the
From fields be accurate. We still get spam.

AD> No one has ever disagreed with this.

Forgive me for assuming that all of this energy in favor of RMX was
based on the believe that it might actually lead to a reduction in spam.

I do apologize for this concern over pragmatics and I especially
apologize for employing some years of experience in these matters. We
are all stuck with our own baggage...

AD> Ah, appeal to authority. The best kind of defence.

Perhaps you missed the request for some information:

HD> Do you have any clue at all what you are talking about?

I apologize for responding directly to one of the numerous ad hominems
that was directed at me.

It's a shame that the ad hominems do not bother you at least as much as
the response to them.

In any event, if you have rules about which ad hominems are acceptable
to respond to and which ones are not, please document them.
