Unfortunately way too much of the effort thus far in the fight against
spam has been this sort of "Good Citizen's Brigade" approach.
You know, ``fix that fence, pick up that rubbish, fix that light,
spammers only take comfort in these things!''...
It's the desparate act of people who don't quite know what to do, but
sincerely want to do something, so they run about neatening things up
in the hope that at the very least it can't hurt. Well-intentioned,
but no substitute for the deployment of weapons of mass destruction.
What we actually need is a Pied Piper for Spammers who can blow his
magic flute and off they'll all dance into the river, their miserable,
disease-bearing, little squeaks never to be heard again.
Perhaps that's not quite a game plan either.
But if you remember the conclusion of that story it may well be
portentous.
