Yes, but nobody is trying to change that. We seem to be agreed that what a
mailing list sends is, from some POV, a "new" message, and so logically a
new "From:" is not wholly out of order.
What's the benefit to this, though, other than obscuring the original
author?
If the mailing list system is, really, merely re-posting a message, with only
minor annotations, so that the core semantic of the mechanism is address
fan-out, then the message is, really, "from" the original author, and not
"from"
the list.
If the mailing list system is, really, taking the original message and doing
substantial massaging/creating of content, then the message is, really "from"
the mailing list system and not the original author.
In the latter case, it makes sense to have a different From: field. Daily
digests are an example of this.
Note that the decision is ultimately subjective and it pertains to expectations
at the human level. It's not simply a mechanical issue.
