Re: earlier agendas

2001-11-06 19:50:02
Fred, doing the planning cycle a bit earlier wouldn't hurt anyone,
but there will always be a chance of last minute changes.

True. Still, it's clear that changes from preliminary agenda to final are
common, whereas last-minute changes happen even now, but rarely.

However, I have to plead for the traditional argument. Cross-
fertilization is *more important than ever* today.

I agree, in principle. I wonder how well it works in practice? How many
people currently go for the whole time and attend meetings in every session,
how many go for the whole time and spend most of the time one-on-one, how many
go for targeted sessions, and how many don't go at all but would if they could
commit on a cheap fare in time? (Less of a problem in the past but I fear a
big problem this time around. Heck, even with a "cheap" fare there are lots
of other costs...)

For some of us at least, cheap fares mean staying over Saturday
night and two months advance booking. The notion of deciding
at the last minute just doesn't arise.

Must depend on where you are. My understanding was that 21-day advance
purchases are common, and guess what, the current deadline for WG scheduling
just misses that deadline, even if the agenda were announced at 1701 on the
day it closes. Even pushing the announced "final" schedule back from Monday
to the preceding Friday would bridge that gap.
