I would also like to see that letter written.
The IAB may be reluctant to do that because it may set a precedent of them
caring, and their workload could go up ... A LOT.
That is far from the only problem that is out there.
There are numerous RFC1123 violations in millions of systems out there.
We regularly hear on WG mailing lists that "we can't do that because it would
break some implementation X"
In the past, this type of thing has been left to consortia (e.g. ICSA has
done firewalls and IPsec, VPNC has done Firewalls, IMC has done SMTP/POP. I
don't know if IMC did MIME as well). While this can work, consortia are
driven by funding members, not standards bodies.
