as an operator and as an ex area director, i have the same bias.
transport is the waist of the hourglass.  "importand and fundamental"
are a good choice of words.

<digression>

as an area director, it was not the technical load which was hard, and i
read every single draft (draft load has grown since).  it was the social
and political 'work'.
