The letter specifically mentioned the axes of race, gender, geographic location 
and corporate affiliation, so the letter was not only about race and gender.  
Other people have mentioned other pertinent axes in the e-mail discussion, such 
as industry segment and background/experience.

I don't think it is possible for remove race and gender from the list of axes, 
though, since there is a notable lack of diversity in those areas.

As I pointed out on an earlier thread, the relevant EU policy body, which I assume has a lot of expertise on this, defines the following protected characteristics, i.e. characteristics that you are NOT permitted to discriminate on in the EU:

Age
Disability
Gender reassignment
Marriage and civil partnership
Pregnancy and maternity
Race
Religion and belief
Sex
Sexual orientation

If we are going to have an itemized list of diversity characteristics, we should not pick and choose, we should include the full list.
