I understand it's "dangerous" to screw around with the "from" part,
but is there ANYTHING I can do to block this stuff from the planet?

One of the best of spam blocking recipes you can find at
http://www.best.com/~ariel/nospam.

Definately NOT.

While nice, and providing some things I didn't use, this nospam had some
flaws (don't remember, been a while) and they were never fixed.

It was also much more complex than it needed to be, without enough
documentation for a new procmail user to follow it.

In the past week, there has been some good postings here on how to block
certian sites. The best method is to check for the spam X-mailers, the
main spam sites, and then score the rest for junkability. (Assuming you
don't want to just bounce everything from people you don't know.)

But make sure you do filter out things you WANT first. Many mailing lists
will fit spam criteria.
