Just so. In fact, I first started doing it from a web hosting account
which allowed unlimited autoforwarding but didn't have an official way
to create a bounce or a /dev/null. Forwarding to
<whatever(_at_)example(_dot_)com> resulted in a bounce that reflected the
original address.

When I first got on the procmail wagon train, I did the same thing,
but I now get equal satisfaction via "EXITCODE=67" (right up there, on
the arcane facts channel).

Regarding some of the other issues mentioned...

The local MTA is configured to include a copy of the original message
in the bounce, so humans can sometimes work it out. Spammers don't
care anyhow. Mailing lists often have unique bounce addresses, so
that often works. The bounce comes from MAILER-DAEMON, and I presume
it has a null envelope-from (or whatever other bounces get from that
MTA).
