Hmm. I suppose that's possible if VERBOSE is set; otherwise it shouldn't
append anything until after it's already finished writing the real log,
because the rcfile (/dev/null) is empty.
I just attempted to deliberately induce a loop with a half-megabyte file
as both the input and the verbose log, and wasn't able to.
