I agree with ESR's first point:

1. It muddles together host-namespace information (which is the only
   thing that ought to be to the left of IN) with attribute
   information (which is the only thing that ought to be over on the right). 

And I suspect there is a compromise.  The left/right thing bothers me
more than using the "generic" TXT RR.

Why not just encode all the data on the RHS?

domain.com IN TXT "v=spf1 _smtp_client <spf data>"

Any spf query tool will then ignore all TXT records that don't match
/^v=spf1 /

It increases transfered data (you have to xfer all the TXT records
(which are generally rare anyway)), but with proper caching, that
should still be a net win, over the spam you aren't transferring.
