Actually, 1*digit allows for an infinite number of digits (though no
dots). At least if interpreted according to RFC 2234. A reference to
RFC 2234 should probably be included before you start using ABNF.

On "dot-versions": I see no added value in introducing dot-versions
unless you also assign some some logical meaning to the version
elements. If you don't, you may as well use a sequence number to
represent the protocol version.
