someone give a concise comparison of these 2 proposals,
in their current forms ?

I don't think there is a good comparison between the various
designated sender proposals. Part of the problem is that SPF and RMX
have undergone many changes in the last few months, and all the
comparisons that have been made are out of date.

I may be missing a few details, but the DMP proposal is basically the
same as using SPF, but instead of looking up the SPF record from the
sender's DNS system, you use an implied SPF record of
"v=spf1 exists:%{ir}._smtp-client.%{d} -all"

Conceptually, DMP is much simpler than SPF, but it doesn't have
anywhere near as much flexibility and maintaining the _smtp-client
tree would be a royal PITA in most cases. For many common cases, the
SPF system will make much better use of the DNS caching and put less
burden on the net.

Is it that SPF, in its current form,
needs more changes at the MTA end, while SPF requires more
changes to DNS servers, e.g. to support DNS wildcards ?

I'm pretty sure you meant for one of those SPFs in your question to be
a DMP, but it doesn't make too much difference, as the answer will be
the same.

SPF and DMP both require wildcards in the DNS server and otherwise
don't require anything special.

DMP can be implemented with fewer changes to MTAs than SPF, but the
amount of changes is really not that important because SPF puts all
the extra work in a library.
