So that when one was visiting a distant site one could send mail with
their own envelope sender and have DSNs delivered to their normal
mailbox. Old timers, like some on the Postfix list, still like to do
that. :)

Backward compatibility, perhaps? When the draft that became rfc2821
was started, before the ink was dry on rfc821, MX RRs were still a
novelty, no?
