IMHO rfc1123 Section 5.2.5 is mostly read today the same as the
corresponding text in rfc2821 as mentioned before and with the
rationale that various rejects on the HELO parameter make sense except
that requiring a correspondence between the HELO parameter and the
SMTP client does not.
