You can, of course, write -exists:stuff as well. In this case an
NXDOMAIN means move to the next step, and A record means negative.
I agree that it would have been nice to have some control over which A
record values are considered a match, and which aren't. This would allow
support of some DNSBL which encode information in the A record returned.
However, I think that what we have is workable.
